TCR Space Day – Barnard Castle
On Sunday 18 January, Teesdale Community Resources (TCR) Hub was transformed into a Space Hub, courtesy of Street Cosmos. Over 200 visitors were wowed by interactive space science experiments delivered by Durham University academics, and had fun making their own cosmic creations thanks to local artists and creative facilitators.
TCR Hub is situated near Barnard Castle, County Durham, and has delivered an extensive programme of activities to young people in the rural Teesdale area for over 30 years. It is a valuable partner in the Street Cosmos project, with expertise of engagement, particularly with young people, in their locality.
TCR Space Day was a collaboration with the TCR Hub team, Durham University Science Engagement, arts charity No More Nowt, nearby Grassholme Observatory, and local artists and musicians.
Visitor could explore the universe in VR, detect hidden cosmic forces in our world, make their own gas giants, remix electronic music based on sounds of space, learn to move like an astronaut, have some quiet time in the solar system sensory room, and get their faces painted (in a space theme of course!).
As well as being a fun, stimulating, inspirational day for people in Teesdale, the event is building towards a supermassive Street Cosmos festival in the summer. Enabling us to try out ideas, further deepen the close collaboration between community partners and scientists, and build our audiences.
